How CBD can Help Veterans

3 min read

Statistics reveal there are about 18.2 million seniors in the U.S. are fraught with one form of mental illness or another. About 30,000 of these veterans have no homes and many of them are battling with anxiety, depression, insomnia, and PTSD. What is however worrying is the fact that when veterans return from service, only about 50% of them that actively seek help. The reason for this disparaging number is because of the stigma associated with getting mental help. Many veterans would rather resort to dealing with their issues on their own, paving the way for substance abuse and addiction. Among those that actually seek help, only about half of them receive the help that indeed works. Cannabis is one of the treatment options available to veterans. Let’s look at how CBD can help veterans.

It is important to realize that what servicemen and women go through is no joke. Having been exposed to some of the most life-threatening experiences and cruel acts of violence one could ever experience on the face of the earth, these men and women find it extremely hard to easily rid their minds off these traumatic experiences. Such exposures one way or the other tend to lead to the development of mental anguish or even illnesses in these men and women. Aside from the strain that the mind suffers, there is the additional problem of physical damage on the bodies of those who take part in physical combat. It is not unusual for many of them to discover some lingering pain in their back, shoulders or necks long after battles have come to an end.

Chronic and Incessant Pain
More than half of the veterans that are treated by Veterans Health Administration (VHA) centers are affected by chronic pain. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), 9.1% of veterans as compared to 6.4% of civilians experience severe pain on a constant basis. Very often, when veterans come out to seek treatment for their pain, they are prescribed a couple of opioid drugs like oxycodone, hydrocodone, and codeine. The problem with these kinds of drugs is that they are highly addictive. While CBD can help alleviate pain, it is not addictive, neither is it psychoactive. Research shows that CBD has what it takes to treat pain, and is beneficial for those with chronic neuropathic pain.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
One of the most prevalent conditions that seem to plague most veterans is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). An estimated 50% of veterans who have PTSD who will never seek treatment. Research shows that individuals with PTSD have reduced levels of anandamide. This is a neurotransmitter that is responsible for the feeling of wellbeing, memory, motivation and many more. This revelation has led experts to come to the conclusion that PTSD can be traced somewhat to a deficiency in the endocannabinoid system. CBD has been found to have a positive effect in elevating anandamide levels. A study in 2014 revealed that there is a 75% reduction in the overall problems of 80 PTSD patients who were treated with medical cannabis.

Insomnia and Sleeping Disorders
Lots of veterans never get the amount of sleep they need. In 2018, a review found how chronic insomnia was prevalent among US veterans. Considering how detrimental sleep disorders could be on one’s health and wellbeing, providing relief is key to those suffering these issues. Of course, there are myriad of sleeping pills out there on the market, but we all know how badly they can reflect on one’s health and how addictive they could become. Research has shown that CBD could play a key role in sorting out insomnia and sleep disorders by bringing balance to the endocannabinoid system.

The benefits of CBD are real. There are lots of clinical trials as well as anecdotal evidence about how efficacious CBD is in helping veterans.
